Statements to State Legislatures
The American Retirement Association, on behalf of its five retirement industry associations, periodically submits formal correspondence to state lawmakers and legislatures across the country, typically in connection with legislation or study committees related to retirement policy. These letters and statements provide opportunities to engage in the debate and share our views with policymakers in state capitals across the country.

ARA Submits Letter in Support of H. 998, the Massachusetts Secure Choice Savings Program Act
In October 2023, the American Retirement Association submitted a letter in support of the Massachusetts Secure Choice Savings Program Act, which would help address racial inequities in retirement savings and make it easier for small businesses to offer retirement benefits to their workers.

2015
ARA Submits Statement in Support of HB 2960, the Oregon Retirement Savings Plan
In March 2015, the American Retirement Association submitted a statement to Representative Read in support of the Oregon Retirement Savings Plan. This bill established a state-based automatic enrollment IRA program that requires employers to offer payroll deduction savings at work for all employees, greatly expanding access to an employer-sponsored retirement plan for all workers.

ARA Publishes Fact Sheet in Support of SB 2758, the Illinois Secure Choice Savings Program Act
In April 2014, the American Retirement Association published a fact sheet in support of SB 2758, the Illinois Secure Choice Savings Program Act. This bill promotes greater retirement savings for underserved workers in a convenient, low-cost, and portable manner by requiring employers with 25 or more employees to either offer a private retirement plan for their workers (e.g., a 401(k)) or access to the state-based auto-IRA program.

ARA Submits Letter in Support of SB 1234, California Secure Choice Retirement Savings Trust Act
In September 2012, the American Retirement Association (formerly known as the American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries) submitted a letter to Governor Edmond Brown in support of signing the California Secure Choice Retirement Savings Trust Act into law. This proposal greatly expands access to an employer-sponsored retirement plan for underserved workers.
